At Children of Cameroon, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. That's why we're excited to share an update on our Library Project in Cameroon, where we've set up small libraries in Bamenda, Belo, and Yaounde to provide children with access to books and foster a love for reading.
The Library Project
Our Library Project began with a simple goal: to put books into the hands of children in Cameroon. We know that reading opens doors to new worlds, fosters creativity, and expands knowledge. By setting up libraries in these three areas, we're giving children the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow.
The libraries are small but growing, and are stocked with a variety of books suitable for different ages and reading levels. From storybooks to educational texts, there's something for every child to enjoy and benefit from.
Meet Kaisia
Kaisia, one of our sponsored children in Bamenda, is a perfect example of the impact our libraries can have. She recently borrowed "The Golden Touch," a book from the Oxford Reading Tree series that we purchased from a charity shop in Exeter.
To track the impact of our libraries over time, we've implemented a records system. Each child signs a records book with their name and the name of the book they've borrowed. This helps us understand which books are popular, how many children are using the libraries, and the impact of the project on the communities we serve.
The Impact
While it's still early days, we're already seeing positive signs. Children like Kaisia are eager to borrow books, and the records books are filling up with their names and the titles they've chosen. This tells us that our libraries are being used and that children are engaging with the books.
We believe that this project will have a lasting impact on the children and communities in Bamenda, Belo, and Yaounde. By fostering a love for reading, we're helping to improve literacy rates, encourage learning, and inspire dreams.
